a few hundred of these

July 18th, 2009 by heliopod | Filed under Jason Nelson

This morning I found the following in my inbox.  I’ve had a few hundred of these “what were you on” emails about my work, and particularly the games. (here and here)

Although I find these hilarious (and somewhat annoying), they do bring up two interesting points. One, that drug use is typically connected with anything slightly different or creative. Given that I only have the occasional red wine and heaps of strong tea, it’s sad the others feel creativity can only be inspired by mind altering powders and herbs (I’m not against it by the way, just don’t do it)

And two, as I’ve been barking for far too long, our works do and can have really large audiences. There is a real desire in the big broad net to see new, novel, interactive, dynamic artworks.

Oh…so the email:

i played your game and hey, you may not know it but you are a good guy. goddamn dude i was on dxm and i smoked weed and somehow in the interwebs i found your game. what the fuck dude. what are you on? whatever it is it must be awesome. or horrifying. but your game is sweet. I think the game is my life and i am leading it. The level where you can go “the wrong way” or “the right way” is pure genius. I must have spent five minutes deciding. IN the end my better half pulled through and I went the right way. I hope I can do the same with my real life. Dude I am so high. But thank you.

Jason

    Two things:

    1) I wish that I got emails like that.

    2) I think, not only does this demonstrate the potential reach of electronic literature, but it demonstrates a particular KIND of reach. I think it is great to know what some “dude” thinks about it, as he’s goofing off in his dorm or whatever. It’s a totally different level of engagement. Before I went to graduate school and learned how to talk about literature… I was reading novels and poetry because it thrilled me. Reading this brings me back to that kind of raw delight that really belongs in literature.
